my wife loves it, November 3, 2011
    By

This is a review on a Coby Kyros MID 1126-4G tablet. I bought this for my wife. She is not a very tech savvy person, I often have to help her when she does anything but basic operations on her laptop. But, she got a smartphone about 6 months ago and I’ve been impressed at how well she’s mastered it. A while back I noticed that she’s started using her smartphone instead of her computer as much as she can so I started looking at a tablet computer for her because they all seem to use a smartphone OS and so I assumed they operate similar. I haven’t tried a tablet for her before because the price of the better models is to much to risk to see if she’d like a tablet. The resistive touch screens and poor reviews on the less expensive models have ruled them out also, until now. This tablet works great, does not feel cheap or fragile and most importantly, after 24 hrs she fell in love with it. It works so good and is so cool, I want one.

At first she wanted to get all the apps she has on her smartphone but some of them are not available through the Getjar app store. Some of the apps she has on her smartphone wouldn’t really be useful on this tablet anyway because it only has wifi, no 3G or 4G or cellular connection of any kind. I know she quickly realized that this device is not a smartphone or laptop replacement. What it does is allow her to use the same smartphone apps she normally uses at home or when there is wifi available with the same touch screen interface as her smartphone but with a much larger viewing screen. So, if you notice that when you’re at home you find yourself reclining in your favorite chair using your smartphone to post something on Facebook or checking the weather forecast or whatever, you’d probably really like one of these little tablets. And it’s a lot cooler to see the pictures of our grandkids on the 10 in tablet screen than it is on the little smartphone screen.

Follow up to my original review:

Thought I’d do a follow up on my review because after using the tablet an issue came up. My wife had trouble surfing the web with the browser that came on the tablet. I installed Dolphin on it and it really made surfing easier for her. In the process of changing the browser I discovered that the apps are dependent on the browser for internet connection. When I switched to Dolphin it made the tablet operate generally much better. If I can ever afford to order one for me the first thing I’m going to do with the new one is download and install a new browser.

****THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE COBY KYROS 7-INCH ANDROID 2.3 4GB INTERNET TOUCHSCREEN TABLET, MODEL MID7016-4G**** There are several other models listed under the same product page which can be confusing.

Please disregard my “Spanglish” accent! I hope my video review gives you more of a first hand look on the Coby Kyros MID7016 screen resolution and touch screen response. This is a really nice tablet that has great potential if you are looking for something that is affordable.

I purchased this tablet for my 12-year old son. I already own an iPad 1G and recently purchased the iPad 2G for my daughter. My young son wanted a tablet but I knew I could not spend hundreds on a tablet because he can be a little destructive. After doing some research (go to Cobys website – they have a more information), I decided the Coby Kyros 7016 was going to serve the needs I was looking for and it was in the right price range.

When it arrived I was actually impressed on the size and the overall appearance of the tablet. It is very well presented in the box. Comes with all the necessary cables, a protective traveling case and even headphones. What I found really cute was that once I turned it on it resembled a large Motorola Droid cellphone! It even had the unlock “slide” key feature like the Droid cellphone has. Now don’t get too excited, this by no means is 100% like a Droid. The picture resolution is NOT the best, but is is not bad considering what I paid for it. The touch screen capabilities has issues. Sometimes I found myself pounding on it instead of lightly tapping with the tip of my fingertip. I calibrated the touch screen and that seemed to help some. It does not use the Android Market, instead something called AppsLib marketplace. It was very easy to setup an account. I actually checked out their website first before I purchased the tablet to make sure they offered a variety of apps. There are plenty of FREE applications. You can also connect your account to your PayPal account to pay for apps. One very cool feature about this is that you can have a pin code and rating limit so your kids can not purchase anything without knowing the pin. They can not download games that are a certain content rating neither.

Internet use was a bit frustrating. This could be because I am so use to the way I get around with my iPad tablet. Getting connected to my home Wifi network was very simple. This is one place I do give this tablet a thumbs up is for the settings menu. If you are familiar with the settings menu with the Android cellphones, then you will have no problems getting around the settings with this tablet. The connection speed is not lightning speed fast, but it will load. Going to a previous page is not a simple task – still trying to understand this basic task since it has to be done with pushing buttons and the touch screen…I think. I just closed the window and started again. I reckon my son will figure it out on his own.

**EDIT FEB. 2012: The silver button on the front of the tablet is the back button. Thank you to all who have commented.**

The screen will rotate as you turn the tablet. The volume does not go very loud, but it might sound better with headphones on. It does have a stylus pen included that slides right into the tablet so you don’t lose it.

In regards to the memory, the 4GB went really fast. I installed about 10 games like Angry Birds Season, Angry Birds Rio and some other really popular ones and the tablet reached it’s limit. I attempted to uninstall some of the pre-installed apps but that is a no-no, it won’t allow you to do that. That is to bad too because they take up so much of the internal memory. I added a 2GB micro SD card I had laying around but plan on getting him at least a 16 GB card so he does not run into any problems.

Overall – if you are looking for an inexpensive tablet that allows you to play games and surf the web this is the way to go. You won’t be disappointed, it is well worth the asking price.

This review is from: Coby Kyros 8-Inch Android 2.3 4 GB Internet Touchscreen Tablet – MID8125-4G (Personal Computers)

I have had my tablet about 2week now, and I have installed the Android market, Amazon Market etc. without rooting. (look for instructions for 7022 model). This tablet works great! I use mine for light web surfing, watching netflix and you tube, and reading books. I read mostly, and I have a few issues that are app realated NOT related to the Coby. For example the Kindle app does not allow you to change the default dictionary for your foreign language books. The Aldiko app nor the Kindle app let me search my dictionaries well at all.

The wifi works well, and I had it going in under 5 min. I get a good signal all over my house as well.

The tablet really works now that I have been able to get apps from the marketplace. I have a 16gig card in mine where I store everything, and that keeps it running fairly well. I have had to reset once, and it wakes up while in standby mode over and over too. Which brings me to the negative: THE BATTERY LIFE IS TERRIBLE! I read a lot on this, and I only get about 4 hrs. battery life. I even downloaded the “no cell” app which did nothing to improve the battery. Other than that it works well enough for my needs. I am thinking about getting both of my kids one to read all the classics that we read together. (I homeschool) This would certainly cut down on costs of purchasing paper books.

Tech support says you may use the tablet while it is plugged in, and that has been a life saver for me!

All in all I have had no major problems with this device. I would recommend this for those who do not have to use this for anything really demanding. It is nice to read books on, browse the web in bed, or watch an episode of Monk while on my sofa!

    ***UPDATE***

Ok, now I have had this tablet for well over a month, and I really wish I could send it back.

    TWO Big cons:

The wifi does not stay connected for very long at all!! I have done everything I can think of. I am even in the same room with it and it disconnects then I try to reset it and there is an “error” message. So I have to restart the tablet in order to restart the wifi connection again!!! That is why I am amending my review! This problem alone is enough to be a deal breaker for most. So please pay attention to those with this same issue. It will make you want to throw this thing through the wall!!!!

BATTERY life is worse than I could imagine. I get maybe 3 hours at most reading or surfing the net, playing a game. You can not watch an entire neflix movie without plugging it in. I am very dissappointed in this devices battery. I could deal with the wifi issue if the battery were better. I will be trying to sell this one and get a better tablet in the future. I like to read, and I am very frustrated that this thing does not have a longer time when reading even when turning off wifi etc.

So in conclusion, I don’t have a problem with the screen or anything like that, but these two issues have made me aware that you really do get what you pay for. I hope that you have enough info to make a decision. My advice is to save a little more money and get a better device.
